First Year Hints and FAQ

Scheduled Lesson Outline

We will be discussing ibewhourpower website, check it out.

List of Homework Goals 2011 Week 3

Your "license" or more properly your training certificate is a legal necessity. DO NOT LET IT LAPSE. This is critically important. You must carry a valid training certificate, you and the employer are subject to fine if you fail to do so.

Look at your schedule and note how many weeks have "TEST" as the activity. YOU won't be in for all of those days, but do check to see which day YOU will be in before YOU schedule a vacation.

We will be doing conduit labs so have appropriate sturdy shoes.

Call or come in for help prior to your week of school if needed. REALLY DO YOUR OWN HOMEWORK.

Read the lesson objectives, use the information sheets as tools and templates in problem solving, read the lab introductions and summaries, you will find a lot of great info there.

Homework

Here are some guidelines on homework, especially those workbooks with math components like DC Theory and Code Calculations:

  1. Problem write-ups are your permanent record of your understanding of the material covered. You do not get any tests to keep but you do get your lesson materials for future reference
  2. Solutions should be clearly and logically presented. This means that:

•  Your method should always be clear. It should be easy to figure out what you're doing and why.

•  Use a lot of space.

•  Equations should usually be accompanied by prose. Before plunging into algebra, state what it is you're solving for. If there are any non-obvious steps in a calculation, explain them.

•  Write equations in a logical order.

•  Remember: Formula, Substitute, Solve, Label

•  Use pencil, rarely do apprentices get 100% of the lesson questions correct first try

  1. Solutions should stand on their own and should be understandable to someone who hasn't read the problem. This means at times that you should paraphrase the question before writing your response. Use pencil.
  2. We will not give numerical grades on HW assignments. Instead, we will check for an honest effort at completion. I'm mainly interested in seeing that you thoughtfully attacked the problem and wrote it up in a clear and coherent way.
  3. Finally, a few minor requests:

•  Use Pencil

•  Limit the amount of loose paper you turn in

•  Put your name on all your books

•  Do your homework a little at a time rather than cramming it all in to the weekend before school

Week 1

There are additional math practice problems available at Math.com, you need to enable pop ups.

If you have problems figuring out the syllabus or aren't clear about the assignment CALL. If it takes you one night to get your homework done you don't understand the assignment.

Do your tech math workbook in its entirety prior to this week, and the more you do long hand the better off you will be. We will not be testing on number conversions, boolean algebra or logarithms. Using a calculator will not be allowed on the tech math test. Do the square roots long hand and show work. Tech math is a go/no-go test. You will have two chances to pass and two failures may result in being dropped, don't let that happen to you. The first tech math test will be right off the bat Monday morning so be prepared. Come in for help prior to your week of school if needed. See the contacts and links page for more links out to math resources if you need them.

Note that you recieved a typed "Scheduled Lesson Outline" showing which lessons are planned for each week. Every group goes at a different pace and encounters different challenges. The outline is a rough plan which we will modify as needed. DO THE LESSONS BEFORE COMMING IN, ALL OF THEM FOR THE WHOLE WEEK ARE DUE MONDAY MORNING.

Show work means Formula, Substitute, Solve and Label. Test questions will be wrong without work. As you do the tech math book there are instructions on how to use your calculator. Fractions, Trig and use of parenthesis are important for later. More information on your calculator is available as a downloadable pdf.

Also note in the syllabus J208A1 there is a lesson outline which shows which lessons go with each test. If there is any question about what lessons go with which test, check the Syllabus. Please record your own scores and track your average. 75% is passing, but a GPA of less than 80% is to be avoided.

We will be doing conduit labs so have appropriate sturdy shoes.

Lesson 3; references are your Agreement and Standards, both of which you receive when indentured.
We will work on the OSHA-10 course this week, which is a prerequisite for many jobs. First Aid Class, this is mandatory, do not miss it.

Week 2

We will be doing conduit labs so have appropriate sturdy shoes.

For lesson 22 in Job Information, there is additional info in Lesson 11 of Code and Practices 1 that might help.

Conduit labs, like all the activities noted as "LAB" in the syllabus, are done in class. Thanks to those who called in to ask this question.

In the J204 Conduit Bending book on page 48 there is an error, for problem 23, calculate out each of the white rows, then make the green row below have the same rise and recalculate using the green row parameter. So there are six pairs of calculations with the same rise but different bend angles.

Week 3

Codeology, do lessons 1-13 as homework. In Class Participation ( ICP's) will be done, well, IN CLASS...Beginning DC Theory, Use the Computer Lab and/or come in for help BEFORE the week of school.

Week 4

More DC Theory and conduit. Tests 7 and 8

Week 5

info on thevenin and norton and much much more here

Tests 9 and 10. There will be proficiency evaluations this year, we may get some of them done this week. Look at your schedule and note how many weeks have "TEST" as the activity. YOU won't be in for all of those days, but do check to see which day YOU will be in before YOU schedule a vacation.
